Why do I have to take Chemical Safety training?

The UBC Chemical Safety Program offers training to meet the requirements of the Transport Canada, WHMIS and WorkSafeBC. Our permission for UBC researchers to receive, handle and research with chemical hazards is dependent on meeting these requirements.

Who needs Chemical Safety training?

The training is mandatory for all faculty, staff, visiting scientists and students prior to applying for or on having access to areas where chemical hazards are being handled or stored.

What is proof of Chemical Safety training and how long is it valid?

Proof of Training is a combination of the certificate received upon the successful completion of the Chemical Safety Course and documentation of training in lab-specific procedures. UBC Chemical Safety training certificates are valid for 5 years.

Which Chemical Safety training do I need?

If you are… Then take It includes
Faculty, staff, visiting researcher or student working independently where chemical are used, and who has not taken the course before Chemical Safety Course
  • Part 1: 6 x 15 minute online modules, each followed by a quiz and a final exam after all modules
  • Part 2: A 2-hour in-person session with a written exam
Faculty, staff, visiting researcher or student working independently where chemical are used, and who has a valid certificate (less than 5 years old) that is nearing expiration Chemical Safety Refresher Course
  • 6 x 15 minute online modules, each followed by a quiz and a final exam after all modules
An undergraduate student volunteering or undertaking a project under the constant and direct supervision of a senior lab member and who will never be working independently in the lab Introduction to Laboratory Safety
  • 8 x 15 minute online modules, each followed by a quiz
Faculty, staff, visiting researcher or student shipping or receiving hazardous chemicals, fuels, lithium ion batteries, or compressed gasses (dangerous goods other than Classes 1, 6.2 or 7) Transportation of Dangerous Goods by Ground and Air
  • 9 x 15 minute online modules, each followed by a quiz
